I'm Matt McHugh. I received my BFA in Graphic Design from Old Dominion University. While I enjoy graphic design my true passion is photography.
Like most photographers, my passion for the art came at a young age. I grew up around several types of photography equipment; everything from medium format cameras to darkroom equipment. Through the teachings of my father (and later classes) I learned not only the how to use settings on an single lens reflex camera (SLR), but how to develop and print black and white images. However, I am always learning and improving my craft.
Through my early days as a photographer I fell in love with photographing aviation. This is where I started with photography. I would go to air shows with my father and shoot several rolls of film. My aviation photography is mostly centered around military aircraft. I especially enjoy photographing vintage aircraft and formation flights.
Recently I have shifted focus to portrait work. With these I try to focus on the moment. I do this by taking more candid images rather than traditional portraits.
When I’m not behind the camera, I can often be found at local coffee houses, working on projects, spending time with friends. I can also be found working with the local wing of the Commemorative Air Force as well as various other things.
