Crucible Media Labs

Hi! My name is John Bilbao. I'm a professional photographer, cinematographer, and editor local to the Los Angeles area, specializing in sports and action. I began my career working at Gopher Digital Productions, the media office of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities athletics program. In my three years at GDP, I operated broadcast cameras for the Big Ten Network, produced the 'Ski-U-Mah Weekly with Kevin Gaard' live talk show for the Gopher Sports social media accounts, worked in the media control room during games, and so much more. Since I graduated, I've been behind the camera in some capacity ever since, whether that was at my day job or for my own independent work.

Most recently, much of my work has been with Erick Gonzalez of WildGlass Photo, with whom I've shot the vast majority of the cyclesport events in Southern California, including the Belgian Waffle Ride San Diego, the Santa Barbara 100, many events for the Team Big Bear and Southridge racing leagues, and dozens of smaller events all throughout the area. Outside of that, I can be found at many of the amazing motocross tracks, race tracks, and drag strips in and around Los Angeles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Without a general idea of the scope of any given project, especially in my niche, it's difficult to give a concrete answer to this question. However, depending on specific needs, I usually work for between $50 and $75 an hour, including travel, time spent on-location, and time spent in post-processing after the shoot. Flat rate quotes based on your needs will be given if desired.
As you can tell from my sample images, I'm a big proponent of vivid, contrast-heavy images that really pop off the screen or the page. I find that this style works exceptionally well for sports and action content in particular.
Yes! Normally, the digital files I deliver will be either in JPEG or PNG format depending on your preference, but unedited raw files are available for an additional fee.
Of course! Getting to know you and your needs is critical to being able to deliver an experience you'll be happy with.
