My interest in and love for photography was triggered while I was still a teen. Early learning was purely trial and error … envision a finished image and then burn through rolls of film until I got the results I wanted. Fortunately, along the way, I discovered the works of great photographers such as Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Yosef Karsh, and others. Their ideas and insights increased my depth of knowledge and accelerated my rate of learning. They, along with a great number of “How To” books, gave me a great start.

Eventually, I was able to take night classes at the Chicago School of Photography. This experience filled in major gaps in my photography knowledge and skills. However, my greatest learning experience came after I agreed to teach photography classes at Benedictine University in Naperville, Illinois. These classes, offered as continuing education for adults, were a great learning opportunity for me. The experience was a wonderful example of the adage, “If you REALLY want to learn a skill, teach it to others!”

I have now reached a stage in my creative life where I feel very comfortable bending the traditional “photographic rules” while exploring new ways of expressing creativity and evolving my photographic style.
