I’m Adam Barth, the owner and photographer behind Sail n’ Sea Photography on the coast of eastern North Carolina. I specialize in children’s and family portraiture, with a focus on creating calm, authentic experiences for kids and parents. My work is shaped by the environment I live in—wind, water, movement—and I try to let the coastal atmosphere guide the way I photograph.
I came into photography differently than most. After careers as a CPA and a United Methodist pastor, I found photography during rehab and discovered that it grounded me in a way nothing else had. What started as a lifeline slowly became a craft, and eventually a profession. I joined PPA and PPNC because I wanted to learn this field the right way: through community, professionalism, and technical discipline.
I am a Certified Professional Photographer designation and a Fellow of Photography with the Professional Photographers of NC. Certification clarified for me how much of our craft is intentional—exposure, lighting, lens choice, consistency—and how much of it is the quiet art of understanding people.
My studio, Sail n’ Sea Photography, is built around child-centered portraiture. My goal is simple: create an environment where children feel free enough to be themselves, and skilled enough as a photographer to capture those moments with accuracy and intention. I lean heavily into natural movement, soft direction, and patience.
Being part of PPA has given me a professional home and the chance to keep growing—not only as an artist, but as a business owner and educator. I’m passionate about helping photographers understand the numbers side of our work, too, from cost of doing business to pricing to seeing themselves as CFOs of their studios.
Most of all, I’m grateful for this community. Photography gave me a way forward when life felt pretty broken, and being able to learn from and contribute to fellow photographers is a big part of why I’m here.
